Five Food Allergy Awareness Week Ideas

You are here: Home / Advocacy / Five Food Allergy Awareness Week Ideas

May 13, 2013 By //  by Caroline Moassessi 8 Comments

This week is officially Food Allergy Awareness Week (FAAW) and I hope you’ll join us all in helping raise some awareness.  The good news is that you can do big things (such as teaching a class) and you can things that one might consider small, but alas are very valuable (such as handing someone a brochure about food allergies)!  Food Allergy Research Education (FARE) has created some interesting activities to help inspire us and so many people I know are personally participating in creative ways.  Here are five things you can consider doing during FAAW…

Food allergy Awareness weekThis poster can be downloaded and shared for free from the FARE Food Allergy Awareness Week Activity Page.

  • Share the Be A P.A.L. program with a younger child’s classroom, sports team or after school activity group.
  • Read an age appropriate food allergy book to your child’s class.
  • Cook or bake food allergy safe food and dazzle someone who thinks eating without allergens is close to torture.
  • Visit FARE’s FAAW Activity Page to print downloads and educational materials (you can download some very fun and interesting posters.
  • Use your Facebook or Twitter pages to offer education regarding life with food allergies by posting links to your favorite resources, blog sites or organizations.

Several states secured Proclamations for Food Allergy Awareness Week and I’m proud to say Nevada has not missed a year since 2004.   Thanks Governor Sandoval!  Raising awareness can be quite creative too!  The Gordin boys (okay, young men) are hosting a Super Smash Brothers Brawl Birthday tournament are asking attendees to bring a donation in lieu of birthday gift to be donated to the Las Vegas Food Allergy Walk.   I plan on dropping off food allergy education materials at local pediatricians office and sharing this link  for Allergy Ready-How to Care For Students with Food Allergies .  In the past, it has been as simple as bringing in Sunbutter, apple slices and chocolate chips to a classroom and reminding students that food allergies are quite manageable and tasty too.

Food Allergy Book NutleyI also hope to read Nutley, the Nutfree Squirrel book to my daughter’s class in honor of FAAW

I hope you choose to help raise Food Allergy Awareness this week too!
