You know you're a Food Allergy Mom when…

You are here: Home / Food Allergy Lifestyle / You know you're a Food Allergy Mom when…

May 10, 2013 By //  by Caroline Moassessi 17 Comments

Let’s face it, food allergy moms live a different life that is enriching, beautiful, frustrating and sometimes crazy!  In honor of mothers across the globe who face our challenge daily I created this list for Mother’s Day.  But, really we need to celebrate ourselves daily!
[unordered_list style=”star”]

  • You find yourself baking and cooking  food allergy safe recipes after 10pm and before 7am
  • Besides lipstick, your purse boasts: extra Emergency Action Plan , Inhaler, Sunbutter®, cleaning wipes and chef cards
  • You are better than a drug sniffing dog and can sniff out a peanut at 50 feet
  • EpiPen®, Auvi-Q® and Food Allergy safe food coupons are like currency
  • You can read ingredients labels without a magnifying glass
  • You can leap through the air higher and longer than Michael Jordan to slap an allergen out of your child’s hand
  • You’ve baked hundreds of cookies for your child’s school over the last few years
  • You carry a jar of SunButter®in your car…just in case
  • Your table in a restaurant is cleaner after you leave the establishment
  • You know what a 504 plan  is and you’re not afraid to use it
[/unordered_list]

and last but not least…You are part of a food allergy community that works endlessly, with great passion, to support each other, to find a cure and to educate the nation on how to live life with life threatening food allergies and anaphylaxis in our midst.

“Your table in a restaurant is cleaner after you leave the establishment” HA! That one made me really chuckle, because I am not known for my house-tidying skills, BUT when I go anywhere outside the house, it definitely ends up cleaner than when I arrived. I am hardly ever without a package of baby wipes, if I’m with my daughter and I’m “that mom” wiping down every visible surface. 🙂
We went to Sea World and were going to watch a show and I wiped down the bleachers we sat on, because kids eat buttery popcorn, PB sandwiches, etc. In contrast, there was a dad in the row behind, looking at me funny as I wiped away, while letting his little one eat Honey Nut Cheerios OFF OF the bleacher seat (as in, he scattered them on the seat and the baby was grabbing them and eating them…) *CRINGE*

      Selena,
I carry a full pack of wipes and have wiped down parks!!! You want me to visit! Actually, when ever my allergy group has meetings people always comment that we leave the place cleaner and they love us!
Happy Mother’s to one absolutely fabulous Mama!

This is great fun!! And so true!! Thank you for a light-hearted twist on a typically heavy subject. I needed that. Love the cartoon, too. I consider this a wonderful Mother’s Day present. Thank you for writing, researching and supporting all of us, Caroline! You have a consistently encouraging tone to your writing and I can’t be the only one who deeply appreciates that about you! 🙂 Blessings and enjoy your Mother’s Day.

      Hi Cheryl,
Yes, sometimes we do need to be a bit light hearted since it can get very heavy, very easy!
Have a wonderful Mother’s day and thank you for being part of our community

So, true…The restaurant cracked me up. I’ve also wondered why is the wipe so dirty on the plane. I’m sure I’ve stopped a few diseases from spreading on those seats.

Right?! Whenever I see someone giving me “the eye” when wiping things down, I make sure to casually stretch out the wipe, so they can see how dirty it is when I’m done with it. 😉

Oh Missy Marketing Mama, it gets worse: I also keep canned kidney beans, a jar of pasta sauce and noodles in case we get invited to stay for dinner. I’m embarrassing really.
