Tree Nut Food Allergy Challenge Today!

You are here: Home / Educaton / Tree Nut Food Allergy Challenge Today!

January 6, 2014 By //  by Caroline Moassessi 9 Comments

Learn from my mistakes friends: today my daughter is having her second food challenge for almond and walnut.  We tested for almond two years ago and walnut last year.  Unfortunately, I sub-conscious forgot  to feed her almond and walnut weekly.  My son is still has his food allergy to all tree nuts.  I feed her peanut butter outside of my house since she does not have an allergy to peanuts.  I take her to the store and buy her a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup and she eats it in the parking lot, wipes her hands and face and then jumps into the car.  My promise to my son is to keep my car and our home nut and sesame seed free.  Sadly, the walnut and almond ball were dropped!

Needless to say, our allergist felt my daughter should revisit these nuts but in the office and under observation. So, the food challenge won’t be as long as usual, but still under medical care.  Once we pass this test, I will then promise to feed her these items weekly and I will purchase them directly from local farms to avoid cross contact issues!  I’ve learned the hard way, so do take note.  We will be testing with Justin Almond Butter since my daughter is not allergic to peanuts.  We are using fresh walnuts from a friend’s tree.

Send us good thoughts today that she is still not allergic to almonds or walnuts!  If all goes well, I promised a trip to Build-A-Bear!

So far so good with the almond! BUT she is sneezing like crazy from driving by the oil refineries down here! So I am not sure if she’ll get to do walnut

I’ve got my fingers crossed for you and your daughter. And don’t worry about forgetting, I would have done it also. That’s a really tough thing to keep up on a consistent basis when you can’t bring those items into your house and have to make a special trip that excludes one child. My daughter does not have food allergies and we’ve been told to make sure she eats nuts (which we cannot have at home due to my son). We do it, but it hasn’t been easy, and certainly does not happen every week!

Thanks Bryan! How do you do it? I was thinking of ordering from a farm then adding on top of a food outside of the house.

Success! She can eat walnuts and almonds that are not contaminated with other tree nuts! So I will need to find a walnut farm to order from!
