This is what I am talking about! Friends who embrace life threatening food allergies. I copied this directly from an Evite, names have been changed to protect the summer loving pot luck types!
One way to request no nuts at a potluck…..
Summer Potluck Extravaganza
Hosted by Mr and Mrs. Good Friend of Food Allergic Types
Dear Friends,
Please do us a favor: please make sure there are NO NUTS (no tree nuts, no any kind of nuts) in any food you bring with you to the party.
Some of our guests have very strong allergies, we want to make sure the food is safe for everybody.
If you are bringing a store made item, please check the allergy label for “made in the facility/equipment shared with nuts”. That’s a NO-NO 🙂 Many thanks! : )
Let’s keep out kids (and adults) safe.

That is not to love about this family? Obviously, guests with food allergies should bring their own food since others may not understand or practice strategies in their kitchens to avoid cross contact. By not having nuts on the food table, nut allergic friends can enjoy the day without having to closely watch what people eating nuts are touching. I also enjoyed how they discussed the parameters of store bought items too!!!
Clearly, Mr. and Mrs. Good Friend of Food Allergic Types can not guarantee a nut free party, but they are working very hard to reduce risk! Bravo to this family!
How do your friends and family manage potlucks and parties when you are attending?
Hope you are enjoying a beautiful summer day-Caroline

I try to host when I can or just bring our own food and eat apart from everyone else if it is outdoors. If it is to be indoors we usually offer our regrets. We don’t eat meat on top of food allergies so we’re used to passing on food based events.

Homa, I really like your strategy regarding indoors and outdoors! Excellent advice. We bring our own no matter what. How many times have we seen spoons shared in a dish? Or cheese dropped over non-cheese dishes? You’re going to the Anaheim Conf right?

Pot lucks really are like buffets that way. If I can get to a store bought fruit plate as it is opened sometimes I feel okay with letting the kids have, say, a strawberry but with your own food you know you’re set. We usually end up sharing anyway. 🙂
I hadn’t heard of the conference, I will have to look into it!
