Nut Free, Dairy Free Halloween is Coming

You are here: Home / Food Allergy Lifestyle / Nut Free, Dairy Free Halloween is Coming

October 24, 2013 By //  by Caroline Moassessi 2 Comments

Lucky me!  Tonight is our Northern Nevada Asthma and Food Allergy Parent Education Group (AAPE) Halloween party!  We go to a local jump house and our kids jump their little hearts out in costume, in a nut free environment while parents relax.  Yes, relax.  How often does that happen for food allergic parents?    I am even luckier this week since I received a gorgeous box full of interesting Divvies treats to try out (thank you Divvies–I remain your number one fan).  I’ve been a HUGE Divvies fan since the beginning of time, but confess to only have eaten the Benjamin Bars (one serious addiction), cookies and caramel corn.  I offered to test out some items that I haven’t tried yet and I wanted to share my findings that might work great for Halloween!  Please remember, what tickles my fancy may turn you off and what you adore in a product might be what sends me running.  Giving into science and exploration of Halloween treats  insert a wink right here)….

  • Bag ‘O Bats–chocolate shaped bats.  My 15-year-old son was in a dead hot fight with my 10-year-old daughter over the Bag ‘O Bat ownership.  Divvies chocolate is the flavor that really resonates with my family.  We enjoy the chocolate chips, the Bingo Bars and any of their chocolate products are hands down our favorites!
  • Boo by 2–Two Chocolate ghosts–eat one, share one?  Or not.
  • Super Stars–gummy shaped stars!  We put the very flavorful three little stars into a mini muffin cup and they were adorable!
  • Kettle Corn–I enjoy the light crunch and right amount of sweetness of this Kettle Corn. Since this is one of the few items I can buy locally, this is often my last-minute Food Allergy Go To gift.
  • Caramel Corn–My daughter brought this bag with her when we took a special girls shopping day trip to California and promptly ordered a drink, no food and then proceeded to tell our server that she will be eating safe dessert first.
  • Cupcakes–I will post about those in my Unique Holiday Food Allergy Gift Ideas blog–these were serious!
  • Choco-Lot Brownie Cookie–Unfortunately, these rich moist cookies are a hot item in my house now and we are hiding them from each other.  Currently, I am channeling my grandmother!  Look below to see what I have been carrying around all week!

If you are not familiar with Divvies, they have a very strict food allergen policy regarding ingredients or products they purchase from outside sources including testing as well.

Yum! I’ve wanted to try Divvies stuff but I haven’t been able to swallow the price tag yet. The bats and ghosties (as they’re known in my house) are adorable! Your bouncy house ‘retreat’ halloween party sounds amazing. Maybe one day…..

Lindsey, the party was a BLAST! My husband hates missing this party since we are watching the kids in our community grow up before our eyes. The “little ones” are now taller than me and are helpers and the new ones seem even smaller and cuter. Yes, Divvies is not cheap, but special in our household. Hence why the fight is on! Thankfully, my husband stays out of it, so it’s the two kids and me fighting over candy that my Weight Watchers diet doesn’t like so much. Maybe one day, you’ll be in Reno during our party and we’ll all bounce around!?

Tools to consider for Eating Out

Eating out with Food Allergies can be quite challenging. For my family, we view eating out as a risk and we use a variety of tools to help us make educated choices.  Most importantly, if we get a gut feeling something isn’t right, we leave or my children don’t eat the item and we find safe options elsewhere...Eating out Tips - Know before you Go
