I officially am done with sweets and I still have four more days to Halloween and one more nut free treat to bake for my daughter’s class. I’m completely sugared out, but it was fun! Halloween has been a roller coaster for my family. First we LOVED Halloween to no end and hosted many fun parties. Then, my son was diagnosed with an allergy to food and anaphylaxis came into our lives. Halloween turned into a day I feared and hated to no end since my son had trouble understanding why he couldn’t participate. Creative solutions were now welcome!
Pumpkin flavored marshmallows Rice Krispie Treats rolled into balls and dipped in melted Enjoy Life Chocolate chips.
Here are some of the fruits of our Halloween 2013 labor…
[unordered_list style=”star”]
- Gluten Free Brownie Monsters with Skittles
- Marshmallow Mummies–unfortunately, they looked like they were heading to a Reggie concert instead of out to spook kids
- Pumpkin flavored Rice Krispie Treats balls with chocolate (huge winner)
- Vampire Teeth and ping pong Eye ball cupcakes!
- Gummy Worm Graveyard (chocolate “buttermilk” cake with chocolate frosting, crushed Oreos and gummy worms.
Accidental Rasta Mummies. Some baking projects miss the boat I guess!
Eventually, I discovered the art baking with an allergy to food and thus the celebrations have returned! Now we continue to host events, but on our food allergy friendly terms: lots of Halloween games, food allergy safe food and dessert (a gummy worm graveyard). Friends come over with beverages and I do the rest.
Vampire teeth and eye ping pong ball cupcake!

GREAT fun food! You guys are going to have so much fun! I love the rasta mummies and brownie monsters especially!! I’m so curious about the pumpkin rice krispy treats…flavored, shaped or colored pumpkins? I am behind in creative halloween food department! Our tradition thus far has been dining out in costumes at a a favorite allergy friendly place (for us Chipotle works), and doing a few houses in the neighborhood until the kids (my littles are 4 and 6) get scared of the bigger kid costumes. We then swap out our candies for safe ones. I have been known to make a dessert called Halloween smoothie.. It looks gross, but it is a yummy treat!

Dee–share your Halloween smoothie recipe? I’m going to post on Wed the recipe for those pumpkin flavored rice krispie treats–they were really, really good. We used pumpkin marshmallows but I added a touch of pumpkin pie spice too.
The Rasta mummies had us laughing. Guess I was suppose to buy solid colored fruit by the foot strips?!
Please share your smoothie recipe!

Agreed, Halloween is now a day I don’t like as much…same with Valentines. 🙂 but awareness is key…we have that! 🙂

Cindy, love your positive approach..it’s all about education! I’m trying to think of something not too sugary for my daughter’s class to enjoy this Thursday? Suggestions? I thought of bringing in apples for each kid with an organic gummy worm sticking out or small mason jars with a juice drink inside? Suggestions?????
