Food Allergy Celebrating with a Plate!

You are here: Home / Food Allergy Lifestyle / Food Allergy Celebrating with a Plate!

February 22, 2013 By //  by Caroline Moassessi 2 Comments

Not long ago I posted about Dairy Free Pancakes featuring swapping orange juice for milk in our batter.  Recently, we toasted an achievement of my son, by way of food allergy friendly waffles and the “special plate”.  My friend and author, Dollar Tree (her book is Mango: Peeled Apart to Find the Heart) shared her family’s idea with me; when someone embodies the true spirit of accomplishment or achievement, then they eat from the plate of honor.  I loved this policy and promptly copied it!  In our family, an accomplishment can be helping an old lady with her groceries or bringing home all A’s.   As long as it is something that helps make us better people.

Therefore, recently my son enjoyed some recognition for his charity work, so I promptly whipped out our Dollar Tree plate and made him waffles from his old favorite:  The Winnie the Pooh Waffle Maker!  Who knew that at age 14, this darn waffle maker and the Dollar Tree plate would still remain special.  I think it brought home  the reality that special doesn’t have to be expensive and toasting a good work doesn’t always include champagne (for the adults) or gifts.

I bought the waffle maker around nine years ago to help my son feel special as we waded through all his food allergies.  Back then, there were limited food allergy cookbooks in bookstores and the internet was not buzzing with fabulous with egg free, dairy free, tree free and peanut free recipes like it is now.  So, a Winnie the Pooh Waffle Maker went a long way!  Apparently, it still goes a long way and I enjoy a little whimsy in our food too!

Do you have a fun recipe or interesting way you celebrate or toast in a food allergen friendly way?  Please share it with us!

Selena, I really liked how Lauren also didn’t necessary choose an expensive plate or something elaborate for her family. Hence why I visited my local Dollar Tree. What I’ve always enjoyed about the plate is that my kids will set the table with their plate and then share what made them proud. Although, I’ve been on a run with little old ladies and groceries myself! That midday shopping brings out our elders! Happy Friday!

Tools to consider for Eating Out

Eating out with Food Allergies can be quite challenging. For my family, we view eating out as a risk and we use a variety of tools to help us make educated choices.  Most importantly, if we get a gut feeling something isn’t right, we leave or my children don’t eat the item and we find safe options elsewhere...Eating out Tips - Know before you Go
