End of School Asthma and Food Allergy Reminders

You are here: Home / Asthma - News / End of School Asthma and Food Allergy Reminders

June 6, 2013 By //  by Caroline Moassessi 2 Comments

Yippie!  Yesterday was my daughter’s last day of school.  I scream out louder than my kids do on the last day.  I love summer and everything about it except the heat, which I whine about endlessly.  I love sleeping in past 6am, hanging out with my kids, baking together, having their friends over, sitting around the fire pit, you name it.  BUT…before I get summer wild, I wrap the school year with some reminders for myself.

My end of school year Asthma and Food Allergy Checklist

[unordered_list style=”tick”]
  • Write thank you notes all staff that truly supported my children’s asthma and food allergy challenges.  If you didn’t receive a thank you note from me, then clearly that means I have nothing to thank you over.  Unfortunately, there is one teacher who missed the thank you note list.  Maybe next year?
  • Small gift for truly outstanding teachers or staff who went the extra mile in regards to safety and inclusion.
  • Schedule my children’s annual visit to our allergist, Dr. Joshua Jacobs (yes, we travel to the San Francisco Bay Area for the appointment to mix in some fun too),  to review their asthma, check out their lung function and have a food allergy check in to discuss the year.
  • Ask allergist for food allergy or skin testing if we think there might have been changes.
  • Pick up physician’s order forms from schools for their allergist to complete before school starts back up regarding managing asthma inhalers and EpiPen® Auto-injectors at school.
  • Take home any extra safe snacks that have been stored in the classroom, school freezer or refrigerator, including any foods for shelter in place or emergencies.
  • Pick up EpiPen® Auto-injectors and asthma inhalers from Nurses office and any other location in the school that belong to my kids.
  • Plan out the upcoming year in regards to if my children need any changes or updates for their 504 plans and get prepared early.
  • Review the last year and take notes of areas that were handled beautifully or situations that were challenging.

Tools to consider for Eating Out

Eating out with Food Allergies can be quite challenging. For my family, we view eating out as a risk and we use a variety of tools to help us make educated choices.  Most importantly, if we get a gut feeling something isn’t right, we leave or my children don’t eat the item and we find safe options elsewhere...Eating out Tips - Know before you Go
