Auvi-Q (pronounced ah-vee-Q) emailed and confirmed that the new voice guided epinephrine auto-injector product will be distributed to retail pharmacies in the first quarter of 2013! Wahoo! I am anxious to try out an alternative to the Epi Pen®. Sanofi, the makers of the Auvi-Q has been working hard over the past two months to build ample supply of the device to meet the anticipated demand for the product and to help ensure nationwide distribution. Wahoo again!! I am a firm believer in a little healthy competition and Epi Pen® has been a fabulous product thus far.
What I am anxious to experience the most is the shape and size of the new epinephrine auto-injector. The pen shape of the Epi Pen® is etched into my mind but my children are growing up with the shape of the Auvi-Q. Think iPods, smart phones and hand held video games. For me, I am thrilled to see a new product enter the market and am extremely curious about the new design concept. I am having a hard time getting my head around the shape, but I truly believe the design is pure inspired brilliance and the voice guidance will be welcomed.
The Auvi-Q will be smaller than my smart phone!
Watch the video below (you’ll need to click on the link) to see the Auvi-Q actually being produced. It is very interesting, you need to wait through the introduction that provides much basic information. There are two videos available on the link below. The first one is of a young man providing a demonstration of how to use the Auvi-Q and the second one actually shows the current manufacturing process. Please, note the second video appears to NOT be a completed marketing piece—we’re just getting a sneak peak!

Sanofi also explained why the Auvi-Q didn’t immediately hit the market after FDA approval, “As you may or may not be aware, epinephrine is a drug that does not have a particularly long shelf-life, so manufacturing is occurring following FDA approval to help ensure that when a patient or caregiver does fill a prescription for Auvi-Q, he or she receives a product with an adequate expiration date.” Looks like Sanofi is gearing up appropriately! I also found the link to Sanofi’s Patient Assistance and Patient Connection programs that offer support if you are unable to afford a Sanofi medication.
Needless to say, I’m extremely curious and will keep you posted and in the loop of when the Auvi-Q will be available to consumers. The second burning question I have is: is my beloved OneSpot Allergy working on a new variation of a carrier for this life saving epinephrine device…or is one even needed?
Good news: OneSpot Allergy commented below and their carriers will accommodate the Auvi-Q. I just adore Onespot Allergy, Elizabeth is always a proactive problem solver.

Hi Caroline! Thank you for updating us about Sanofi’s injector. I’m eager to try it out too. Rest assured that it will fit into the Best EpiPen Belts and EpiPen Carrying Cases I sell on http://www.onespotallergy.com. I am working its dimensions into a new product I’m launching, since I do think this injector will be very helpful in some sectors of the market. I’ll be sure to keep you posted. All the best ~ Elizabeth Goldenberg, Founder and President, Onespot Allergy

I am looking forward to more info about the new med injector. I hope that cost for those of us without insurance is less than the current option.

Could you please send me a free demo; I am a school nurse. Please let me know. Thank you, tewing.

Hi Tewing,
I don’t work for Auvi-Q, but here is their customer service number: Tel: 800-981-2491. Tell them you are seeking a trainer for your school. My school district had called in too to request a trainer. Good luck!

My daughters allergy dr just recommended this Auvi-Q. It was the best invention for kids and people not familiar with epi pens. This walks you through step by step. The pharmacist was amazed when I showed her.
