Tobacco History Made: CVS to Drop Cigarettes

You are here: Home / Advocacy / Tobacco History Made: CVS to Drop Cigarettes

February 5, 2014 By //  by Caroline Moassessi 8 Comments

I still can’t believe this news that I woke up to!?  CVS/Caremark stopping the sales of Tobacco products?  I have been up all night long with a sick kid and her cold that came to visit, so I thought maybe I mis-understood until I found my email from Harold Wimmer, CEO of the American Lung Association confirming the good news!  This comes on the heals of the word on Tuesday that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is kicking off a national education campaign focused on preventing America’s youth from smoking and using Tobacco.  CVS’ bold move will cost them an estimated $2 Billion in Sales and signals that times are changing!
Check out Harold speaking on Huffington Post Live this morning–I’m very proud of the ALA’s work and how a very passionate group of people can make a difference and will save lives.

CVS/Caremark is taking the lead on morphing from a simple pharmacy retailer into a health care provider and addressing the effects of tobacco use on their customers and community is critical.  The full stopping of selling Tobacco products will be final by October, 2014.  Today’s New York Times article, “CVS Plans to End Sales of Tobacco Products by October 1” is very comprehensive and my favorite article this morning about this ground breaking move.

Bravo and kudos to CVS’s courage for standing up in what they believe in and for being a change maker by hopefully starting a movement regarding tobacco prevention and cessation!

What great news! I know they are “drug” stores, but they are supposed to be “drugs” that improve your health, not make it worse, so this makes perfect sense!

      Luann,
I was just so impressed with their ability to make such a bold decision. CVS is truly trying to start a movement.

That’s incredible news, especially since the revenue they stand to lose is substantial. It’s great when a large company like this stands up and says it’s not all about the money.
I remember as a child going for long car rides with the windows rolled up and my dad happily smoking away…I hope our future generations never tell those stories!

Heather, I remember my grandfather blowing up his hospital room when I was little girl since he lit up a cigarette while inside an oxygen tent! We’ve come a long way, but still have so much farther to go. All those poor smokers are dying and the tobacco companies need new recruits — our youth!

That is so awesome! Especially for a pharmacy- they probably see so much medicines for people with lung problems due to smoking.

Lucy, In one report they did mention that they are not helping the problem they are trying to fix!
