Talk about inexpensive and fun! I made these supersized sugar cubes for Valentine’s Day afternoon tea. Each cube yields about two teaspoons of sugar and I flavored these with Rose extract. I’m now addicted and plan on other flavors such as lemon and mocha. They very easy and since I live in dry Nevada, they set up very fast!
I used ice cube trays, hence the super size, but you can easily use candy molds for smaller sugar cubes. This batch yielded two teaspoon sized cubes! They just felt so festive and fun! My husbands parents are coming over for lunch and I’m hoping they’ll be dazzled too!
- 1/2 cup superfine cane sugar (regular size sugar will work too)
- 1 teaspoon-2 teaspoons water
- 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon flavoring, such as rose, lavender, lemon or vanilla extract or concentrated waters
- 3 drop food coloring is optional
- Shaped silicone or plastic candy/ice cube mold.
- Measure sugar into a medium sized bowl
- Thoroughly mix 1 teaspoon water, flavoring and food coloring in separate small bowl.
- Add liquid mixture to sugar and mix well with a whisk or fork.
- The texture should feel exactly like wet sand. If not, add additional water 1/4 of a teaspoon at a time.
- You don’t want a soggy mixture.
- Spoon sugar into mold and then gently press down to compact the sugar.
- Set out to dry for around 4-5 hours, until the cubes are completely dry. Overnight works too.
- Time is vary based on the humidity of your area.
Happy Tea Time! Share your favorite flavors and if you make sugar cubes too!

I can’t wait to make more. My father inlaw loves sugar cubes with his tea. I just need to make smaller sized ones!
