Science Monday–the Food Allergy Way

You are here: Home / Advocacy / Science Monday–the Food Allergy Way

April 21, 2014 By //  by Caroline Moassessi 2 Comments

I have enjoyed reading Food Allergy Sleuth for quite some time.  I’m hardly a scientist and just about failed out of biology class in high school when it came to dissecting frogs (oh it got worse in college), nevertheless, I have always enjoyed science and understand how things work.  That is one reason I am a huge Asthma Allergies and Children fan–I feel those Ehrlich boys do a great job in translating the science of food allergies into workable terms that I can do something with.  Along those same lines is Food Allergy Sleuth.  Jessica Martin, a food allergy mama who holds a Ph.D in neuroscience, writes an easy to read blog that tackles the science behind the many aspects of allergies, research (I adore any and all of her research reviews) and life with food allergies.  She translates complicated scientific terms and issues down in to lay person chatter!

Her reputation and intelligence earned her an article published in Slate, “The Flu Vaccination is Safer Than We Thought,” discussing egg allergies and the flu vaccination being compatible.  This is the kind of information I seek, as a parent of two children with food allergies.  I need to know the why so I can make good choices.  Jessica answers the why in a food allergy mama friendly way.  I met Jessica at the Food Allergy Blogger Conference where we dove deep into conversation about the realities of how drug makes it’s way through discovery, clinical trials and into the hands of consumers.  We talked about the dire need for citizens to contact legislators to urge the National Institute of Health to push for more food allergy research funding.  I enjoyed every minute speaking to her and left the conference wanting more Jessica time!

I hope you stop over to Jessica’s site, Food Allergy Sleuth if you have a cup of tea or coffee in hand and are in the mood to read a different approach – a tad more scientific – to life with food allergies.

p.s.  Jessica did not pay or ask me to write about her or Food Allergy Sleuth.  She is reading this (hopefully) at the same you are too!  My goal is to share interesting things along our path of life with food allergies.

    Caroline,
Thank you so much for such a kind and thoughtful post! Science and food allergies are two of my greatest passions and I love sharing that with others! I’m looking forward to reconnecting at FABlog Con 2014. Happy science Monday!

Jessica, My pleasure! I truly hope we can enjoy more conversations and with a wider audience too! Eventually, I would love for us to be kicking back over tea, rocking in our chairs talking about the “old” days–before a cure…
