My Pumpkin is Teal! Yours too?

You are here: Home / Advocacy / My Pumpkin is Teal! Yours too?

October 14, 2014 By //  by Caroline Moassessi 2 Comments

Food Allergy Research and Education has blown Halloween out of the water!  This sheer brilliance was the good work from the Food Allergy Community of East Tennessee and now it’s a hot national trend!  Within two days of the launch, over 2.2 million people read FARE’s blog post about it and today the Teal Pumpkin Project Facebook page post has been viewed over 38,000 times!  The purpose of painting our pumpkin’s teal is to raise awareness and start those important food allergy conversations AND to encourage people to offer non-food treats.  The project works like this:

  • Buy low-cost, non food treats to give away for Halloween (I scored great items at the Dollar Tree in Reno for less than the cost of candy)
  • Paint a pumpkin teal (I also scored a sweet $1.00 pumpkin that I painted from the Dollar Tree)
  • Display your pumpkin along with the FARE POSTER on Halloween Night to indicate you are giving away non-food items.

I spent less that $8.00 on this endeavor – including paint!

The cut out light up pumpkin cost under $5.00 from Target the smaller pumpkins were $1.00 each the Dollar Tree

  • Teal Pumpkin Poster to Display on Halloween Night

I’m going to add a picture of my pumpkin to FARE’s TEAL PUMPKIN PROJECT FACEBOOK PAGE–you too?  Here are some fun ideas from FARE of non-food items:

I get carried away with Halloween Trinkets (I think I have converted Connie Green, co-founder of the California Advocates for Food Allergies) and have some left over from last year too.  I love eye patches, spider rings and pretty much anything Halloween related!  Yes, I wear my spider rings all month long with great pride and great embarrassment to my kids.

Happy Halloween planning.  Please share your non-food treat ideas below!  I am sure you have some fun ideas we all want to hear!

Keeley–that’s super clever! Bulk pack shopping and immediately useful. I was trying to think of some fun for the parents but then I realized that giving out wine would look really, really bad!

Tools to consider for Eating Out

Eating out with Food Allergies can be quite challenging. For my family, we view eating out as a risk and we use a variety of tools to help us make educated choices.  Most importantly, if we get a gut feeling something isn’t right, we leave or my children don’t eat the item and we find safe options elsewhere...Eating out Tips - Know before you Go
