caterpillar grapesI am speaking and attending the Food Allergy Research and Education conference this weekend in Chicago.  Therefore, in lieu of sharing a Friday Food for Thought blog post, I thought I’d share a Friday Fun post of a treat that remains super popular with my kids.  I posted this recipe moons ago and it is such a winner, I needed to post again!
Caterpillar Grapes
I served up this batch without the crushed cookie “dirt”

 Grape Caterpillar Recipe

This recipe is gluten free, peanut free, tree nut free, sesame seed free, dairy free, egg free and Vegan.  Of course, always use food products and brands that are safe and appropriate for your dietary needs.
Bag of Grapes
1 bag of Mini Chocolate chips (choose brand appropriate for your allergen or Vegan needs)
1/8 cup of Icing safe for your allergy needs
8 inch Collin cocktail straws
Bonus: crush up allergen safe cookies and serve these yummy critters on top

collins straws

Collins Mix straws are skinny enough to handle the grapes beautifully.

  • Separate grapes from vines, wash and dry
  • Skewer grapes onto straw to create the caterpillar’s body
  • Using scissors, snip ends of straw off if the straw is protruding
  • Pipe or dab (using a tooth pick)  two small dots on one end of body to create eyes and press mini chocolate chip onto the dot
  • If you are interested, to create the effect of mouth push the straw to through the grape to the point of almost poking through without actually poking through!

I hope you enjoy as you stay Asthma and Food Allergy Safe!

    Caroline,
These are so adorable! I’m always looking for fun “allergy-friendly” snack options and I’m adding this to my list! Thanks for sharing and I look forward to hearing about your time at the FARE Conference. I wanted to attend but this is the only weekend we can take a vacay. So bummed that I’ll miss out on getting to meet you in person, yet again.
    xoxo,
    Lauren

I don’t know how I missed this but I think it would be a fun thing for children with or without food allergies. It would be great for a party.
