Nevadans: Epi Pen Call to Action!

You are here: Home / Advocacy / Nevadans: Epi Pen Call to Action!

March 29, 2013 By //  by Caroline Moassessi 2 Comments

Dear Nevadans,
Today is our day and we are going to make a Life Saving Difference!  No more food allergy deaths!  There have just been too many and the stories all have a similar ring, “limited or no access to epinephrine fast enough”.  We can try to fix that by keeping our children safer at school with epinephrine!  We have our first hearing with the Senate Health and Human Services Committee this Thursday, April 4th at 3:30pm and I am asking every Nevadan to take some time right now and do three things to help us pass epinephrine that will require all public schools to maintain stock epinephrine auto-injectors (epinephrine and EpiPen® Auto-Injectors® Auto-Injector) and authorizes private school to stock as well.

school access to epinephrinemy note book–picture taken while working with legislative council on the bill draft–the irony, the room was packed with nuts!

Call to action to help bring Stock Epinephrine into Nevada Schools, it’s time to support SB453…

  • Please attend the Senate Health and Human Services Committee hearing on Thursday, April 4th, 3:30pm–bring your children, grandma and all your friends!  We need to pack both rooms (Carson City and Las Vegas) full of supporters to show this committee how important this bill is to us!  The hearing will be held at the Nevada State Legislature in Carson City and telecast in Las Vegas in the Sawyer building.  Wear light blue if you can so we can stand out in the sea of dark suits.  We’ll also provide stickers to wear on your lapels asking for support of epinephrine.
  • Email the members of this Committee (contact information is listed below) and ask them to support epinephrine.  Please note that Senator Debbie Smith is our Food Allergy champion who is pushing this bill through on our behalf, so a thank you or encouraging word would be nice for her!  In a very short paragraph and/or using bullet points, tell them why this bill is important to you.  They need to know how this bill will make a difference.  They need to understand the value.  Ask family and friends to email too.
  • Legislators need to know what you need, so please take this poll and share this link with other Nevadans and ask them to vote FOR epinephrine at this link : SB453

phone callCall your friends, family and co-workers and ask them to attend the hearing this Thursday, April 4th at 3:30pm

Spread the word amongst everyone you know!  Share this link, call your friends, pull out the all the stops and let’s go make a difference!
This bill effects every single child in Nevada: the undiagnosed student, experiencing their first allergic reaction at school, the diagnosed student with no epinephrine at school and the diagnosed  student who has an epinephrine at school, but something goes wrong or a second dose is needed.

Sen Kieckhefer cardVisited Senator Kieckhefer’s office too.  I really admire his work, even though I know him personally, he approached our bill professionally and with the honest intent to do what is best for the children of Nevada.

Senator Joe Hardy Debbie.Smith@sen.state.nv.us
Senator Ben Kieckhefer tsegerblom@sen.state.nv.us

Please email the Senate Health and Human Services Committee members-and ask them to support SB453 and attend next week’s hearing along with your children, family and friends, we need to make a presence–wearing light blue!

p.s. The Nevada State Legislature Gift Shop has some really great priced jewelry and stuffed animals—I’m just saying.

[…] Caroline of Grateful Foodie up in Northern Nevada has been meeting, often at a moment’s notice, with stakeholders, lobbyists, and representatives to tell the stories that will give a voice to this bill.  I was so excited to help that I contacted our Assemblywoman, Ellen Spiegel, before we even had a bill draft number.  I was nervous, I didn’t want to trouble her but she not only replied to my e-mail, she had someone from her office call and chat with me at length about what this bill means to our family and to families like ours in Nevada.
