Kyle Dine's New ECZEMA Song is Mighty

Eczema song Kyle and Eczema CompanyHave you seen it?  Eczema is a brutal disease and condition that never sleeps or rests.  Food Allergy educator and entertainer, Kyle Dine, makes us smile while empowering kids in this video to not let eczema win!  In honor of Eczema Awareness Month, Jennifer Roberge, owner of The Eczema Company and our beloved Kyle Dine teamed up to dedicate a new video and song to kids battling eczema on a daily basis.

I asked Jennifer a few questions about Eczema since my daughter has it very mild and our experience is limited.
Why is Eczema is tough to manage?
Jennifer: Approximately 20% of kids in North America suffer from Eczema.  That’s way too many children. For many kids their eczema may be mild, but for some their skin can be very severe. When my son’s skin was at its worst, his sweet little three-year-old body was covered in what looked like burns from the neck all the way down to his toes.  He didn’t sleep well due to relentless itching, we had to constantly keep him from scratching, we had to chase him around the house to put on his cream and it all took a toll on our entire family. No one was sleeping and the eczema honestly consumed us. I cried daily out of frustration and a sense of hopelessness when new treatments or skin care didn’t work for us. Thankfully my son is 95% better now after we found the right combination of dietary changes, laundry modifications, clothing and skin care that worked best for him. But our journey was a long one. I know so many families are in the worst of it right now and I hope this song and our story can give them hope.
Why is this video important?
It’s so difficult to see our little ones suffer so much. So, we created The Eczema Song to remind kids how awesome they are and that eczema does NOT define them. They are amazing and strong and they won’t let eczema slow them down. We also hope this song allows children to gain a sense of control over their eczema, so fighting over cream applications and wet wrapping becomes a thing of the past. Our goal with this song is to empower children with eczema and their families.

Congratulations on a great song, raising awareness and most of all….honoring kids fighting a battle that never sleeps-literally.

Great song! Of my three kids, all have ECZEMA to some degree. I use ALL Liquid Laundry Detergent, which helps. No Fabric softner because I had a severe reaction to it when a family member was visiting and decided to put fabric softner on all of their clothing in the dryer and caused me to visit the doctor to receive treatment for severe open sores that took awhile to heal.
Find a good allergist or pediatrician that truly understands the cycles of eczema and the triggers. Ours has a daughter that has severe eczema and also is our peanut/sesame allergy doctor. Follow their recommendations on bathing (We need to use Aveeno Baby Bath, yes it is expensive, on my 8 year old, no exceptions!) I bring our own towels to hotels/motels, or friends swimming pools. My son takes an allergy pill every day to prevent the itchiness. When severe, he takes a pill and an oral allergy medicine. We buy AquaPhor ointment in large tubs and apply often, expecially after a quick bath.
Keep the skin clean and moisturized. Keep the body cool to prevent sweating and irritation to the affected areas. Get a few prescriptions from the allergist to help with the needed ointments when the skin gets irritated and the eczema flares up. Consider skin allergy testing in case it is an allergy to a common food or a pet.

Thank you so much for joining the conversation and sharing your tips. Learning from each makes a difference. Keeping the skin cool is so tough during the summer! Thanks again Linda for taking the time to share.

Tools to consider for Eating Out

Eating out with Food Allergies can be quite challenging. For my family, we view eating out as a risk and we use a variety of tools to help us make educated choices.  Most importantly, if we get a gut feeling something isn’t right, we leave or my children don’t eat the item and we find safe options elsewhere...Eating out Tips - Know before you Go
