Honoring Celiac Awareness Month with Candy!

You are here: Home / Food Allergy Lifestyle / Honoring Celiac Awareness Month with Candy!

May 20, 2014 By //  by Caroline Moassessi 2 Comments

Now that headline sounds flat out wrong or something that my eleven year old daughter would boast.  The truth of the matter is that Gimbal’s Fine Candies kindly sent me some candies to test out in honor of Celiac Awareness Month.  My family does not manage Celiac disease but I have several friends who do battle this invisible disease.  I’ve sat in board meetings watching colleagues not eat due to someone’s forgetfulness and adding croutons to our salads, etc.  With life threatening food allergies–the words life threatening will often inspire people to pause.  Unfortunately, I am not sure if this is the case for those battling Celiac Disease.  Nevertheless, all of us need to be aware of Celiac Disease and offer foods that keep our friends with this disease healthy and included.  In the spirit of tasting yummy candy–my family stepped away from our Jelly Bean fetish and sampled two new flavors that were fabulous and have opened up a new candy world!  For more information about Celiac Awareness Month, visit Celiac Central.
Gimbals cherry lovers
Special note:  all of Gimbal’s Fine Candiesare free of the eight major allergens and of course, are Gluten Free!  I was not paid by Gimbals to write about them or to comment with kind words.
We sampled Gimbal’s Cherry Lovers candy which is made with real cherry juice.  The heart shaped treats offer rich  flavors such as: Bing Cherry, Chocolate Cherry and  Cherry Daiquiri.  My son loved the Chocolate Cherry flavor the best and I was hooked on all of them!  He thought the flavors were strong and unique.  I agree, you can easily identify each flavor and not guess which is which!
Gimbals sour lovers
Next, we enjoyed the Gimbal’s Sour Lovers candies!  Another sour kind of winner.  I did pucker up and had to cut my self off before my lips peeled off my face.  I’m a bit of a sour whimp but my kids confirmed, again, these candies had a nice strong flavor and they felt they were “pretty fancy” as far as sour candies go.  The favorites were Sour Blueberry, Meyer Lemon (this flavor was incredible) and Strawberry Daiquiri.
Next week I will post a contest that will include one bag of each flavor–so keep your eye out.

Happy Celiac Awareness Month!

Tools to consider for Eating Out

Eating out with Food Allergies can be quite challenging. For my family, we view eating out as a risk and we use a variety of tools to help us make educated choices.  Most importantly, if we get a gut feeling something isn’t right, we leave or my children don’t eat the item and we find safe options elsewhere...Eating out Tips - Know before you Go
