Nevada food allergy mama, Summer, shared this on facebook the other day: A GPS device that uses satellite to alert emergency responders to a life threatening situation–even if you are in a remote location! Check out Spot-Ready for Adventure GPS tracking devices. This means that if you’re camping with your food allergy family member and they go into anaphylactic shock with no cell phone coverage, you could use one of Spot’s many device options to send out a call for help! Living along side the Sierra Nevada Mountain range, my family often finds ourselves without cell coverage. This is always on my mind when my son goes skiing: what if he has a reaction and his cell phone has no reception? I’ve looked into Satellite phones in the past, but they were expensive and hard to find.

The Gen3 video above showed a check in button feature that I believe is quite valuable during trips. Spot offers a variety of products and is international. I checked out their coverage map and the coverage was very comprehensive but you’ll run into trouble if you are visiting places like Rwanda and Zambia. If I understand right, Spot also sells a device that would enhance your own cellphone service. I’m excited to check out SPOT for our summer travel and my son’s next track meet that is takes his team to remote driving spots. My daughter and I will go on a California Gold Country trip soon too, so I think this might come in handy. Summer said she saw it at REI, but the Spot Website invites you purchase online and they offer a find a retailer function too.
Disclaimer: I have not used Spot nor have they contacted me or asked me to write about them. My intent is to share with you ideas or items that might be of interest to our food allergy and asthma community. I’m off to check out this product out myself this weekend to better understand the product choices and service available.
