Well, it is a new/old dairy free cheese product! Galaxy Nutritional Foods has just released a new line of true dairy free cheese alternative products called Go Veggie! Go Veggie dairy-free does not contain any dairy. Sounds obvious right? Not always so. In the past Galaxy offered cheese alternative items but they contained casein, which is a dairy protein. Therefore, my dairy allergic son could not eat their products…until now. Read Galaxy’s Press Release!
Responding to market demand, as of October 1st, 2012, I can happily purchase the Go Veggie dairy free product line. Per Galaxy’s website, they do not use any peanuts, tree nuts, egg or wheat in their factory. They also state they have a strict allergen and cross contamination program regarding dairy. I emailed their customer service to explore the term, “strict allergen and cross contamination program” and what does truly entail?
Update as of 4pm PST today: wow Galaxy is fast. Their cream cheese product is produced in a 100% dairy free facility and all other dairy free products are manufactured on shared lines but must adhere to Galaxy’s cleaning procedures and Quality Assurance program. They have a system of documentation and checks and balances. As always, contact the manufacturer to insure the standards are acceptable to your family’s choices.
After years of experience, I’ve learned that blanketed statements truly need to be vetted out. I had an experience a few years ago with a gluten-free bakery that said they were nut free. What they meant was that they did not add any nuts to their products. They did not read labels or worked to confirm their ingredients were from nut free sources and had no cross contamination issues! Lesson learned.
Have terrific Tuesday!-Caroline
