 As the food allergic consumer, doing your homework before you head out is the most powerful tool you have! Below are some of my favorite tools for learning how to navigate eating out and traveling with food allergies.

Guides and Articles

Dining Out (FAACT)– Tips and risk reduction techniques from the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Action Team (FAACT). Link includes powerful educational poster. 

Dining Out (FARE) – Knowing what to avoid, Selecting a Restaurant, Preparing for your Restaurant Experience, Communicating with Restaurant Employees, and Selecting a meal are the topics covered in this useful link from Food Allergy Research and Education.

Step-by-Step Guide for Eating Out with Food Allergies – Article from Allergic Living Magazine written by Allergic Girl Sloan Miller. Ms. Miller has helped an endless number of food allergic children and adults to feel safe and confident to eat out.

Dining with Food Allergies: Factors Critical to a Safe Experience and Common Errors – Article answers the question: can a person with food allergies dine out safely by providing tips including a section regarding the diner’s role and common allergic dining erros.

Apps and Tech for Dining out

Allergy Eats – Online website and smart phone app helps consumers find restaurants by name, chain or location which are ranked and crowd sources by people with food allergies. This app is popular and offers rankings for national chains.

Allergy App Rates the Best States for Allergy Friendly Dining – Article features most friendly to least friendly states.

Food Allergen Training and Education

The Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Connection Team and TAP Series have partnered to support the training and education of food allergen management and service for the hospitality industry. Discounts are offered through this FAACT link. 

Three ANSI accredicted online course are available ranging from $14.95 to $29.95 each. 

  • Allergen Awareness
  • Allergen Plan Development
  • Allergen Specialist

Aller Train offers ANSI accredited online and in person training for the back and front of the house food handlers – including cafeterias, restaurants and college food service. Comprehensive training includes posters and other allergen food service materials.

Serve Safe Allergens Online Training – Online course is offered in both English and Spanish for $22.00.

Restaurant Software

Certistar – Patent-pending restaurant software, plus a school product to help identify and manage food allergens to reduce risk and liability.
