Confused? FARE Issues Statement RE OIT

You are here: Home / Current Blog Post / Confused? FARE Issues Statement RE OIT

February 23, 2016 By //  by Caroline Moassessi Leave a Comment

OIT FARE statementFood Allergy Research and Education (FARE) issued a statement last week regarding the organization’s position regarding Oral Immunotherapy (OIT): FARE Statement on Oral Immunotherapy for Food Allergies. Stacey Cohen Sturner, founder of the popular Facebook group: Food Allergy Treatment Talk shared this little gem today–thanks Stacey! Since there is much confusion surrounding OIT, I appreciate it when an organization shares their position. There are so many conflicting articles on the internet and in print right now regarding OIT, feeding infants peanut and other therapies and food allergy management it boggles my mind. This statement simply shares how FARE is approaching this one particular therapy.
No matter what you or I read, we must always, always, let me say it one more time, ALWAYS vet out our sources, even when they appear knowledgeable and seek out our physicians.  After doing your homework to confirm the data is good, then sit down with our doctor and make choices based on your very unique health composition, financial boundaries and stress levels. I get so excited when I read an inspiring story and more often than not, when I dig deeper, I discover that fabulous success talked about is truly someone else’s story not mine. Therefore, I savor the inspiration and keep living my story.
It is thrilling to witness the new research taking place and frustrating since we want therapies right now. Not ten years from now. My nephew is a researcher and he explained to me about thirteen years ago that a cure or therapy will be many years away and my son will be an adult when things will begin to change. Cyrus turns eighteen in five months.  My hope is that my children will be able to witness a cure or find a therapy that fits their health and lifestyle needs (I have forgetful teens right now, so my personal hope is for a therapy geared at the absent-minded).
Thanks FARE for making this statement and kudos to everyone who has found a therapy that is working for them! One day, I hope to see a food allergy cure, an understanding of how to stop the growth of life-threatening food allergies and, if we are asking for it all, I also want to see all people with life-threatening allergies protected and supported.

Tools to consider for Eating Out

Eating out with Food Allergies can be quite challenging. For my family, we view eating out as a risk and we use a variety of tools to help us make educated choices.  Most importantly, if we get a gut feeling something isn’t right, we leave or my children don’t eat the item and we find safe options elsewhere...Eating out Tips - Know before you Go
