This week has certainly been exciting! I am grateful for the opportunity to speak on a panel with Senator Debbie Smith and Dr. Allan Stillerman about “Protecting People with Life Threatening Allergies” at the National Conference of State Legislators. After a successful panel, Nona Narvaez, co-founder of the Anaphylaxis and Food Allergy Association of Minnesota invited me to be a guest at their booth at the Minnesota State Fair to help spread food allergy awareness. I was impressed with the number of volunteers (over 200 during a 12 day period), the quality of information shared and how much press they receive (TV and newspaper).

What a great way to reach thousands of people! I will post more about how Nona organizes, recruits and engages both volunteers and fair visitors. She has it wired!
I was also thrilled today to observe Nona and Lars Johns, the Food Safety Guy, train a Head Start Program Kitchen staff (managers and supervisors). This special training deserves a separate post as well! Now, we are about to depart to the Minnesota State Fair to eat more food (hello Baklava on a stick) and help out at the booth.

One of the hardest things I find about managing both life threatening food allergies and asthma is talking to others. I hate to be the one that might be perceived as demanding, pushing or for asking too much. What I now know, fourteen years later, is that honest, clear information presented with kindness works!..
