Airborne Allergy Myth Article Dispelled

You are here: Home / Allergy Deaths / Airborne Allergy Myth Article Dispelled

September 14, 2015 By //  by Caroline Moassessi 3 Comments

airline peanut myth article reviewIf you do one simple thing this week, that is easy, critically needed and powerful, please consider the next sentence.  Share this piece written by college professor, Jessica Martin, PhD, who also authors the popular blog, Food Allergy Sleuth, “Rigor” Mortis, Post Morten on Airborne Allergy Article”, published on Asthma Allergies Children.  Her article clarifies the tragic mis-conceptions that have been unleashed via main stream media that is gathering attention in the wrong direction for people managing life threatening food allergies.  Basically, Tim Spector, Professor of Genetic Epidemiology at King’s College, London, published a very misleading article, “The Myth of Flying Peanuts: Not So Deadly After All”.  Unfortunately, this is another example of mis-information being spread and is about three steps backwards regarding potential airline legislation and the life threatening severity of peanut allergies remaining understood.
Dr. Martin, reviews this article, step-by-step explaining, from a scientific and factual position, the elements of the article that were either flat-out incorrect or misuse of original research publications to make his claims.  This is dangerous stuff for folks like you and me!  Not only are we all dealing with family and friends telling us that the solution to our children’s food allergy is to feed them the allergen, we now have people believing airline travel is not risk based!? Tim Spector has done a disservice to humanity and those with life threatening peanut allergies.
As a parent of a peanut allergy son hoping to embark on his secondary education next fall, I fear people will dismiss my son’s peanut allergy as a myth and endanger him thanks to a professor who may have compromised his professional ethics in the spirit of media attention.  Tim Spector has also written a book about Diet Myths, has link on his website regarding personal appearances and clearly, needs media attention to help promote his books and beliefs.  I do not appreciate him choosing life threatening food allergies as a tool to gain publicity.
Special Request:  I ask you to read Dr. Martin’s piece, “Rigor” Mortis, Post Morten on Airborne Allergy Article”, published on Asthma Allergies Children and share it on social media.
Can’t we fight fire with fire too?  Shouldn’t we launch our own social media campaign toward sharing the scientific truths about life threatening allergies?
Disclaimer: I am a huge fan of the Asthma Allergies Children website, along side admiring Jessica Martin, PhD’s work and friendship.  She is the voice of food allergy reason, from the scientific view-point.  I want to her voice heard even louder!  I was not asked to post about her article by either party and hope  you help me share her voice with others.

A very kind thank you, Caroline! I appreciate your thoughts on the effects this could have on the food allergy community because I chose to cover more of the science aspects.
